When the time comes to replace your old boiler with a new one, it is important to weigh up your options and understand the different options available. Depending on the size of your home and your individual needs, there are a variety of boilers to suit different requirements. Take a moment to think about what you currently use your boiler for at home – is its output sufficient for your family, or do you potentially need one which is more efficient or heats up quicker?
Buying a new boiler is a big expense, and as a result it is imperative that you do your research and pick the right boiler for you.
As one of the leading specialists in boiler installation Essex, we often get asked how to choose the right boiler by our customers. The team at Prime Gas has years of experience helping our clients get the most out of their heating systems, and in this blog we’ll explore what you need to know before making a decision.
What are the different types of boiler?
These days there are three main types of boiler to choose from – a conventional boiler, a combi-boiler or a system boiler. The most popular choice in the UK is a combi-boiler. These boilers work on demand, and everything is contained in one unit, so you have instant hot water and don’t need to wait for it to heat up if you want to jump in the shower.
Conventional boilers use a water tank to store hot water after it has been warmed up, keeping it warm for a long time before it is needed. Whilst system boilers work in a similar way to combi-boilers due to the fact that everything is stored in one unit and work by directly supplying hot water to radiators / taps / etc.
What boiler should I pick?
If you have a large home with multiple bathrooms, we recommend that you stick with a conventional boiler. This is because if multiple people want to use the hot water in one go, combi-boilers are unable to meet demand. Plus the water tank of a conventional boiler allows hot water to be stored for use at a later time.
However, if you have a smaller home with less people living in it, a combi boiler could prove to be an efficient and cost effective option. You should also take into account the space you have at home, and also the system you already have in place. If you already have a convectional boiler with a cupboard for your water tank, it makes sense to replace like for like if you have a big home. However, if you want to make the switch to a combi-boiler, the cupboard which currently houses your water tank could become handy extra storage space.
