Hyundai Motor Company Limited is an automobile firm based in South Korea and is the fifth largest automobile producer in the world. In 1996, Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL), a subsidiary of Hyundai motors had entered the Indian market with the hatchback Santro.
The Hyundai Santro and the Getz have been discontinued after doing good business in India. A new model, the Santro Xing launched in 2003 comes in petrol, LPG and CNG versions. Priced between Rupees 3.0 to 4.05 lakh, the Santro Xing gives mileages of 17.92, 20.0 and 11.8 kmpl for petrol, CNG and LPG variants, respectively.
The seven seater SUV the Santa Fe launched in 2014 is priced from Rupees 25 lakh. The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a rugged SUV which directly competes against the Santa Fe.
The HMIL had launched the i10, a substitute for the Santro, in 2007. The Hyundai i20, launched in 2010, replaces the Getz. These two hatch backs have a decent share in the Indian hatchback market. The i10 has a starting price of Rupees 3.88 lakh and has four petrol and two LPG variants with fuel efficiencies of 19.81 kmpl and 19.2 km/kg, respectively. The i20, launched in 2008, has six petrol and four diesel variants priced between Rupees 4.81 and 7.77 lakh. The Sportz edition i20 has auto transmission.
An entry level hatchback, the Eon, launched in 2011, with an 814 cc engine was upgraded in 2012. This 3515 mm long car comes in five petrol and three LPG versions at a starting price of Rupees 2.85 lakh. The Grand i10 launched, in 2013, is their entry level diesel model. Their CRDi engines for the diesel and the Kappa engines for the petrol versions have improved fuel efficiencies of 24.0 and 18.9 kmpl, respectively.
In all their latest models the Koreans have used the fluidic design. In the sedan segment, HMIL has the Xcent, the Verna, the Sonata and the Elantra. The Xcent, launched in 2014, with a starting price of Rupees 4.66 lakh has seven petrol and five diesel variants with auto transmission on two petrol variants. This car with a fuel efficiency of 19.8 kmpl for petrol and 24.4 kmpl for diesel is a car to watch in 2014. The Verna launched in 2006, has been upgraded in 2010 to the Verna Transform. The Sonata is a petrol car introduced in 2012 with auto and manual transmissions for a basic price of Rupees 18.7 lakh. The Elantra, launched in July 2012, is a premier sedan in three petrol versions, two of them having auto transmission. The Elantra priced from Rupees 12.74 lakh has a mileage of 12.35 to 13.04 kmpl.
With the launching of i20 face lift and the Tucson the HMIL wants to further their business in India.
